Boothbay Harbor Police, Rotary work together on bicycle safety

For the past couple of months, the Boothbay Harbor Police Department has been working on the problem of bicyclists riding the wrong way on Townsend Avenue. In early June, Officer Larry Brown and Rotarian Bill Prince, who oversees Rotary’s Bicycle Program, did a presentation at the Congregational Church, as part of the program welcoming seasonal workers.
Brown spoke about bicycle safety, emphasizing bicyclists following the rules of the road, specifically not riding the wrong way on Townsend Ave. A poster size photo of this intersection was on display and later given to Prince for display at the Rotary Bicycle Shed. A smaller printout, listed in several languages from the home countries of these seasonal workers, not to ride their bicycles the wrong way on Townsend Ave. is given out when leasing bicycles.
Rotarian Prince said the Rotary Bicycle Program was started by Rotarian Seth Hedgecock on 2007. Presently Prince is assisted by Rotarians Rick Mittersling and John Skogland. Bicycles can be picked up at the Rotary Barn either on Saturdays 8:30 to 11 a.m. or Thursdays 5 pm-6 pm. Rotarian Prince said the program is supplying about 100 bicycles. If anyone has any questions, they can contact Prince at 304-561-4930.
