Where does it go?
Dear Editor:
I was reading the Register online this afternoon and ran across this: "selectmen received an unusual question from Boothbay Region Elementary School students. In a letter from Jessica Lessner’s third grade class, students said they are learning about Earth Day and asked what happens to the shells and debris from fireworks launched in the harbor. "Is it cleaned up? How do you help take care of our planet?”
A few years ago, while working for the largest electrical engineering and manufacturing company on planet Earth, I had the pleasure of releasing one of my team for an opportunity in Berlin, Germany. While she was setting up her apartment there, she inquired about the “garbage disposal.” The apartment manager asked “what is a garbage disposal?” After a detailed explanation of shoving your garbage down the drain and flushing it with valuable potable water, the apartment manager asked: “Where does it go?”
Perhaps we should send a few Boothbay third graders to the Oval Office to lend a hand.
